It is January 1st and Batista, thepresident of Cuba has just fled the country fearing Fidel Castro, a Cubanrevolutionary who mounted a rebel force called the 26th of July Movement againstBatista. Castro assumes power on the 16th of February and establishes adictatorship. Communist Rule In Cuba So far, the Soviet leader, Khrushchev is inquestion of what political track Castro is deciding to take. Russia themselveshave only one connection with Fidel which is his brother Raul who is no doubt afull communist. The Communist Party of Cuba at this time has no contacts withCastro quite yet. Unfortunately, Raul never showed his true feelings forcommunism to his brother, Fidel. This causes quite a predicament for the SovietUnion to make them seen and heard by Cuba. Smartly, Russia sends AnastasIvanovich Mikoyan, who held business contacts in the US, to the states as aguest of the Russian ambassador. Fidel hears of Mikoyans arrival in the USand invites hi m to visit Cuba. Although Mikoyan is traveling throughout theisland, looking things over, Castro still has not identified himself as aCommunist quite yet. In May of 1960, diplomatic relations between Russia andCuba are established following Mikoyans visit to the island. One reason whyCuba has turned to Russia is because the US had cut off their oil supplies andimposed an economic embargo on the island because of the naturalization of USowned companies and citizens by the Cuban government. This calls for a massiveoil shipment from the Soviets but unfortunately, Russia was unable to handlesuch a demand because of their limited overseas shipping capabilities. Subsequently, Russia puts an order for extra oil tankers from Italy, acapitalist country. When Italy agrees to the business proposition, the US isinfuriated that another capitalist country was willing to help a communistcountry. Italy saw it as nothing more than an opportunity to make extra money,regardless of opposing economic systems. Back in Cuba, Castro has begun to makeenemies for himself. The many policies he has instilled angered many who foughtbeside him in the revolution to overthrow Batista and many didnt approve ofthe socialist reforms he made such as the naturalization of businesses and hiscollectivization of agriculture. Castro felt he needed protection against theUnited States and because Cuban forces mainly used small arms and guerillawarfare, Russia sent in tanks, artillery and attack planes as well asinstructors on how to use the new technologies. The former Russian ambassador inCuba was then replaced after Khrushchev soon realized that he worsened relationswith Cuba instead of bettering them. A journalist replaced him by the name ofAlekseyev who was friendly with Fidel and his brother, Raul. Alekseyev was seento be much better suited for his position and worked well with the Cubangovernment because he was already known and trusted by them. By the early1960s, Castro has openly endorsed Communism with his many appointments ofcommunist leaders in key positions of the Cuban government. As time, went on,Cuba became increasingly dependent on military and economic aid provided by theSoviet Union. Russia made up much of the Cuban trade interactions including thepurchase of sugar and nickel. The American government became aware of Cubasgrowing success and began to wonder if Cuba would act as an example ofsuccessful Socialism, persuade other countries in the Western Hemisphere torevert to a socialist form of government or even serve as a base foranti-American propaganda. He gives her magical chalk to make a magical door on the stone wall and it actually works. The door opens and she enters a medieval styled hallway which leads to a long table with a feast on it. The half goat creature had told her to not indulge in any of the food that would be on the table but since she hadn’t had dinner yet she decides to take a bite out of a grape. At the end of the table there’s another creature that looks like a mix between a ghost and a mummy. This creature is the Pale Man and was completely still until Ofelia took the bite out of the grape and then it didn’t take it very well. It got up from the table and chased after Ofelia as if it wanted to harm her but she escaped from it by drawing another magical door on the roof and climbing out of that surreal hall. The Pale Man represents her father at the dinner table just a few minutes before and how his character is. He’s a mean and selfish person and that’s why he got mad when she got something from his feast. After she got back to her room the Faun scolded her for not following his instructions and this represents how everyone is always telling her she’s doing wrong even though it was an innocent mistake. The Faun also told Ofelia that if she followed his instructions again he could cure her mother. She would have to put a plant like creature which is called the Mandrake Root in a bowl and feed it fresh milk every day. She would also have to place it under her mother’s bed. Her mother was pregnant and she seemed like if she was going to die. After awhile her mother started getting better but as soon as her father found out what she was doing he disapproved and handed the Mandrake Root to her mother. The mother was stunned and very bothered by what Ofelia had done. Ofelia tried to explain but her mother just told her stop believing all the fairytales she’s told her and that the world they live in is a very cruel world. After this the mother tosses the Mandrake into the fire. It starts screeching and screaming as if it was in pain and as soon as it begins to burn the mother starts to die as well. It might seem like if what the Faun said was true but Ofelia is just seeing things as she wants. She just liked to have hope and believe her mother was dying because they threw the Mandrake into the fire but in reality she just didn’t want to accept that her mother was dying. She wanted an excuse to accept it because her life wasn’t going well at all and she wanted to look at the positives. After the mother died the doctor saved her baby brother and of course her father didn’t treat her any better. Ofelia believed that her father was not fit to take care of her brother so she tried to steal him but it was a bit difficult for her father not to notice. She tried using the chalk that the Faun gave her to make a magical door but her father caught her in the act. The door that she drew opened up but she didn’t have time to escape and through that same door her father’s soldiers came in to tell him that he was needed outside. She escaped and ran outside with her baby brother but when her father saw them he chased after them all the way into a maze of tall bushes. Ofelia ran into a dead end which seemed to open up magically into the center of the maze. There she met with the Faun who told her that she could become the princess of the other world but only if she sacrificed blood from an innocent person. He referred to her baby brother. Even though the Faun said it would only be a small amount of blood and not enough to harm the baby Ofelia could sense that he had bad intentions because he took out a large knife and had an evil grin on his face. Helpless Ofelia argued with him that she didn’t want to sacrifice or harm her brother but as the Faun was leaning in to take the baby from her the father came in somehow and demanded for her to give him the baby. He ended up just taking it from her and the angry father decided to shoot Ofelia which caused her to die. When she fell on the ground she was leaned over a well which is where the blood of an innocent body was supposed to be sacrificed and a drop of blood fell from her into the well. While all of this was going on the army that was against her father’s army got to the scene because they had won the battle since Ofelia’s father was the general and he was distracted by Ofelia taking the baby when his army needed his direction. One of the females in the army that won was working for Ofelia’s father but secretly followed the direction of his enemy’s army. She was extremely close to Ofelia and loved her like a daughter so when he saw that Ofelia’s father had killed her she had her army kill him as well. This was officially the end of that battle but it was also the end of Ofelia or was it? When Ofelia drew the chalk door on the wall of her father’s bedroom it magically opened up but when her father caught her trying to steal the baby and take it through that door his soldiers came through there and tried to pull him away because they needed him. If the door was magic the soldiers would not have come through there as if it already existed. Therefore the door was already there and Ofelia was imagining it because she had hope that she could escape from her father with ease and as if by magic. The fact that her father also went through the dead end of the maze into the center of the maze as well as his enemy’s army proves that she was making it up as she went along and following her story full of fantasy through her imagination. Also when her dad arrived there he could see Ofelia arguing with someone but the problem was that there was nobody else there. The father could not see the Faun at all. At the very end of the movie Ofelia is dead but she all of a sudden appears in a world very different to the one where she lived before. The Faun is there as well as fairies and there is three golden thrones in the center of what seems to be a palace. In one of the thrones sits her mom and in the other sits her original dad, not her step dad who was the army general and the real father of her baby brother. Her mom, her dad, and the Faun tell her that she can finally be a princess in that new world which she’s now in and through the whole movie that was all she ever wanted. The fact that she’s dead is what finally took her away from the horrible life she had and finally gave her peace of mind. She was imagining this final scene while she was dying because she did not die instantly. With the horrible experiences Ofelia went through she desperately needed to get away somehow or have hope that everything could somehow get better. People sometimes wish they could use magic to get what they want or at least believe in magic or fairy tales in hope that their lives could be similar. This is exactly what Ofelia does. She creates a story in her mind where she gets opportunities to make her life better but in reality she’s a helpless little girl that has no chance of living a happy life.

Consequently how these subjects are portrayed in the mass media will heavily influence societys understanding of these issues. Jonathan Demmes Philadelphia (1993), a film produced by TriStar is Hollywoods first attempt to confront AIDS and homosexuality. This film deals with how Andrew Beckett, a gay man copes with AIDS, discrimination and the stigmatisation of homosexuality. During this essay I will analyse how AIDS and homosexuality are constructed in Philadelphia by using two opposing strands of argument which show the mechanisms through which the films narrative both reinforces prevailing mainstream cultural values and how it problematises them. I will address five questions that the film prompts: 1) Are the images of the gay men in this film fair and representative of the gay population? 2) Is the innocent victim/guilty victim paradigm addressed adequately and does the film challenge or reinforce this mainstream ideology? 3) Does the film accurately represent AIDS? 4) How is gay sex addressed, implicitly, explicitly or not at all? 5) How is homophobia dealt with in this film? Finally I will summarise my arguments and in conclusion give my personal opinion of the films capabilities and deficiencies. In order to make the issues of homosexuality and AIDS in this film accessible to straight people, Andrew Becketts/ Tom Hanks character has been toned down. Andrew Beckett is portrayed as charming, masculine and non- threatening. He is normal, white, middle class, a successful lawyer and an all round nice man. In fact Beckett is so unassuming that it is not until he is rushed to hospital to be treated for AIDS (about 20 minutes into the film) that we know he is gay because we meet his same sex partner, Miguel Alvarez/Antonio Banderas. The problem with Philadelphias cleaned up, positive images of gay men is they are not truly representative or an accurate portrayal. Gay men come in all shapes and sizes, colours and creeds and have individual sexual persuasions. As Alan Sinfield said in his book Gay and After: 1 The pervasive images of white, upper-middle class, straight looking people is at the expense of those more distanced from and threatening to the mainstream, such as the poor, ethnic/racial /sexual minorities, drag queens, and butch lesbians The deal is acceptance for the straight-acting at the price of dumping embarrassing brothers and sisters. Hence this film potentially alienates any gay person that is not white, clean-cut and middle-class and it implies to a largely homophobic audience that anything other than a gay man who is virtually indistinguishable from a straight one is unacceptable. However in the films favour it must be said that Philadelphia was not made for a gay audience and it was produced at a time when the social climate was aggressively anti-gay due to the onset of AIDS. During the film a courtroom scene takes place where Andrew Beckett is prosecuting the law firm that sacked him because he was ill with AIDS. In this scene a former employee of Becketts law firm is being questioned by a lawyer who asks her how she contracted AIDS. She tells him through a blood transfusion when giving birth. The lawyer then says So in other words, in your case there was no behaviour on your part which caused you to be infected with the virus, it was something that you were unable to avoid, isnt that correct? The former employee replies, I guess, I dont consider myself different from anyone else with this disease. Im not guilty, Im not innocent, Im just trying to survive. Although the film attempts to address the innocent/guilty paradigm it leaves the message open to interpretation. Viewers could either agree with the lawyer, believing the former employee to be innocent because she contracted the virus through a blood transfusion and not gay sex thus implying that anyone who contracted AIDS through gay sex is guilty. Alternatively, the viewer might agree with the former employer who thinks of herself as not innocent or guilty, just a human being person trying to survive an illness. The film should have been more explicit in delivering its intended message that there are no guilty victims just people whom have HIV and are dying of AIDS. In this instance, Philadelphia fails to challenge the mainstream ideologies instituted in the1980s and 1990s by many of the straight population and people in the medical establishment who blamed AIDS on gay men and branded it the 2 gay cancer, a divine retribution delivered by God to punish deviants and perverts. A further deficiency within this film is that it could be accused of making AIDS look heroic and sweet because many aspects of Philadelphia are far too idyllic. As illustrated earlier Andrew Beckett is an ideal man, he is charming, good-looking educated etc. and he miraculously wins his court battle against a huge law firm. Andrews family are wonderful, loving and understanding and even his boyfriend, Miguel is ever devoted, even when Andrew has cheated him on in a cinema with an unknown man. The same kind of unrealism is true of the films portrayal of AIDS, as Jefft says in his film review on the Gay.Net website: 3 It isnt like a Tom Hanks movie you dont get hugged by Antonio Bandaras and gently expire while Joanne Woodward weeps for you in the corner. It takes forever, and you wont win an Oscar for putting yourself through it. Instead, youll turn into a skeleton slowly, achingly over time, and lose your job, your money, your lovers, your eyesight, your appetite, your bowel control, your memory, your mind. Youll rage and scream, youll alienate all of your friends and family and ruin their love for you and destroy your regard for yourself. I would rather step on a land mine in Vietnam and die with my body parts hanging in a tree. A more true-to-life and less ideal representation of the issues surrounding AIDS in this film would have helped to give the mainstream a more real understanding and perhaps helped them to examine their ideological beliefs concerning AIDS and homosexuality. The most striking problem with this film is its refusal to address gay sex. The relationship between Andrew and Miguel is so chaste it is difficult to tell that they are lovers. In fact Andrew is more intimate with his mother and sisters than with his own boyfriend, he hugs kisses and dances with his family whereas the only affection he shows for Miguel is a quick peck on the cheek and a slow dance which is anything but intimate. This failure to show intimacy is deeply problematic and reinforces the misconception that homosexual sex is something to be ashamed of and hidden. It compounds the ideology that homosexual contact is deviant and perverted and thus too offensive to show on film. Philadelphia should have depicted intimacy between Andrew and Miguel, it could even have shown them using a condom, this may have been more useful to a homophobic audience than having no sex scenes at all and would have delivered the message that there is absolutely nothing wrong with gay sex. The filmmakers management of homophobia is very complicated in this film because Philadelphia clearly denounces civil rights discrimination. This can be seen in the fact that Andrew Beckett wins the court case against his previous employers who sacked him because he has AIDS. Yet, Philadelphia does not totally damn the social bigotry and prejudices that can be seen clearly in Jo Miller/Denzel Washingtons character. In this film Andrew Beckett decides to take his previous law firm to court and attempts to hire Jo Miller a homophobic, black lawyer who is very reluctant to take the case. However Jo is won over only because he witnesses Andrew being treated badly (as black people have been treated) by an embarrassed librarian who urges a very ill looking Andrew out of public view. To its merit, the film draws a clear parallel between discrimination against blacks and discrimination against people with AIDS because it is Jos identification, as a black man, with Andrew that leads him to represent Andrew in court. Throughout the court case Joe Miller who is a raging homophobic is gradually seen to shift his point of view as he works with and gets to know Andrew Beckett. However, Joes transformation is very uncertain because he never really gets to the point of being comfortable with Andrews homosexuality or his illness. He only reaches a stage where he can identify with Andrew on the level of a person who has been discriminated against. In fact one scene towards the end of he film still shows just how homophobic he still is. Joe is in the bar and one of his friends is jibbing him that he must be gay because he is representing a gay man. Joe retorts Hey, let me tell you something, these people make me sick, Philko, but a law has been broken. You remember the law, dont you? So in the end this film delivers the message that gays especially those with AIDS should be entitled to equal civil rights but homosexuality is still an abomination that is not to be condoned. In conclusion, there are some major problems with the film: the images of the gay men are not fair or representative of the gay population, it fails to adequately challenge the mainstream ideology that gay men have AIDS because of their deviant behaviour, it idealises and glamorises AIDS, completely denies gay sex and a fails to clearly define its position on homophobia. However having said all this I still believe considering the social climate and that it was a first attempt to broach these subjects by Hollywood that it was groundbreaking. Director Jonathan Demme did not make this film for people already educated about AIDS. He made it for an ignorant public that does not know the difference between HIV and AIDS, that thinks it can catch HIV from touching an infected person and that still brands gay men as perverts. It is for people such as these that Philadelphia, with all its shortcomings, helped to increase their general understanding of AIDS and may have forced them to examine their fear of AIDS and dogmatic and intolerant treatment of gay people.

David Rayburn, the lead NTSB investigator for the Lake Butler crash, said the 31-year-old truck driver, Alvin Wilkerson, was refusing to talk to investigators about the accident. Rayburn and Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper refused to release the name of Wilkerson’s attorney. Calls to Crete Carrier Corp., the Lincoln, Nebraska, trucking company Wilkerson drove for, were not immediately returned. Blood tests showed he had not been using alcohol or drugs, Leeper said. Wilkerson was not using his cell phone at the time of the accident. No charges have been filed against Wilkerson, although a criminal investigation continues. Rayburn said driver fatigue was one of main factors being looked into as the cause of the crash. â€Å"He was driving quite a bit during those 34 hours, probably too much,† Rayburn said, adding that Wilkerson was making deliveries and loading and unloading his truck. At the time of the crash, Wilkerson was driving a load of bottled water from High Springs to Jacksonville, a trip of about 85 miles. But the driver who was behind the wheel had anything but that. The WESH 2 I-Team discovered that he has a long history of problems with the law. According to driving records obtained by the I-Team, Alvin Wilkerson has been cited for eight traffic violations since 1995, including two speeding tickets and two seat belt violations. He’s also been cited twice for driving with a suspended or revoked license and twice more for operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe condition. Wilkerson, age 31, was driving for Crete Carrier Corp., which is headquartered in Lincoln, Neb. Crete employs 5,400 drivers operating 5,100 tractor-trailers around the country. According to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records, Crete carries a satisfactory safety rating. Even so, the I-Team discovered that in the last two years, Crete drivers have been involved in 482 crashes and 20 of those ended in fatalities. In Florida, transportation officials conducted 259 inspections of Crete trucks and drivers in the last two years alone and found 111 violations. Eight of those violations were so serious that inspectors immediately forced the trucks out of service and off the road. WESH 2 News asked Crete officials why they would hire someone with Wilkerson’s driving record, but they did not respond. A Florida Highway Patrol investigation of the accident continues. An investigator said they are checking on the truck’s systems. He said there was no indication that the truck’s brakes failed, but it appears the truck made no effort to stop before it slammed into that car full of children. The different translations of The Oedipus Cycle emphasize and suggest different aspects of the presented scene. There are multiple examples of this in the comparison of The Fitts and Fitzgerald’s Translation and the Luci Berkowitz and Theodore F. Brunner’s Translation. Such as the differences in format, sentence structure, and diction imply different characteristics. Also, similarities in the two translations reinforce the importance of the concepts.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The most noticeable difference in the two translations is the format of writing. The Fitts and Fitzgerald’s Translation was in a formal poem format whereas the Luci Berkowitz and Theodore F. Brunner’s Translation was in a more informal paragraph. The diction of the two paragraphs reflects the formal versus informal aspect as well. The first part of the sentence, if it were viewed separately, sounded like Oedipus genuinely cared for the people when he said, â€Å"I choose not to hear it from my messengers, but came myself† (LB & TB.) This quote showed how Oedipus was putting out the effort of coming out to the general public to see how bad things were. He did not wish to just sit back and find out the news through hearsay. He wished to see it for himself. All of his sensitivity was then void with the rest of the sentence when he said, â€Å"I have come myself to hear you – I, Oedipus, who bear the famous name† (F & F.) The rest of the sentence gave off the impression that Oedipus was telling his own people that they were lucky that he even came out to see them. Although they may not seem to be very different at all, they are in fact extremely different. By addressing the people as â€Å"children† versus â€Å"my children,† Oedipus switched the relationship from a ruler and the ruled to a father and his children.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  To an unaided eye, it may appear as if there is no significant difference between one translation and another, but in reality there are several differences. The same core message is there, but in this case, Oedipus came out to be a much better leader in the Fitts and Fitzgerald’s Translation due to his ability to stay calm in calamitous situations and his strong connection with the people. It must be kept in mind, though, that the similarities are just as important as the differences. With the presence of similarities, the message is amplified greatly, as in the instances of Oedipus’s arrogance and his goal to help.

In my experience I have witnessed many children challenging themselves to take risks, for example when my target child was playing outside he challenged himself to climb higher on the climbing frame, which he achieved and then after I explained to him how this activity provides risks for him and other children, also I explained to him that there is nothing wrong with taking risks and that they help you learn how to do certain things. Another time when one of the children at my setting was challenging them self was when they were learning how to ride a bike, I saw the child getting frustrated and angry with them self because they kept stumbling and nearly falling off, I then stopped the child and told him how learning to ride a bike is a challenge and a risk for them and explained that it is fun but it comes with a few risks e. g. possibly falling off and injuring themselves. After I told him this he was more careful on the bike and after some encouragement he felt more comfortable when challenging himself and taking risks in the near future. Children benefit from play activities that challenge them in many ways, one way is that it provides them with a learning curve to try new things even if they can’t do them at first, for example climbing high ropes. Everyday life always involves some kind of risk and children need to learn how to cope with this. They need to understand that the world can be a dangerous place and that care needs to be taken when negotiating their way around it. Inevitably the most powerful learning comes from not understanding or misjudging the degree of risk. Similarly the toddler who ignores the warning, for example if the child says â€Å"don’t climb too high, you might fall†, and experiences this then they are not likely to make the same mistake again. Being told about possible dangers is not enough, children need to see or experience the consequences of not taking care. When I observe young children, I have seen that from an early age, they are motivated to take risks; they want to learn to walk, climb, ride a bike and are not put off by the tumbles they experience as they are developing coordination and control. In my setting children find their own physical challenges and, in doing so learn about their own strengths and limitations. Children who are sheltered from risk and challenge when young will not be able to make judgements about their own capabilities and will not be well equipped to resist peer pressure in their later years.
